URL Filtering Process

1. Supportspread installs an uses a Web Filtering service via the centrally managed firewall.
2. Supportspread configures Web Filtering settings dependent on client’s specific requirements.
3. A managed firewall connects to Supportspread Central management portal over an Internet connection and is updated with the Web Filtering service options.

All URL filtering is then controlled from a central location.

4. A client behind the gateway generates an HTTP request.
5. The firewall extracts the requested URL.
6. The firewall then sends a categorisation request for the URL to the Supportspread URL Filter.
7. The Supportspread URL Filter obtains the categories from the Web Filtering Server server.
8. The Supportspread URL Filter sends the category back to the clients firewall.
9. The firewall determines whether access to this site should be denied or permitted, based on the clients configured preferences.
10. If access to the site is denied, the gateway generates its own HTTP response, which informs the user that access has been denied and allows them to enter a password in order to override the URL filtering mode.
11. Note: URL filtering works for HTTP requests only.
